BTW, 4ocean has just released a video update on the OPR vessel: https://www.instagram.com/tv/B0MDhYeF7tP/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

In the video, they offer some clarification for the “90% of plastic pollution” claim. They say that, obviously, the OPR vessel alone can’t stop 90% of ocean plastic pollution from reaching the ocean. Instead, it was their intention to point out that 90% of ocean plastic pollution comes from river mouths, and they hope the vessel will have an impact on that.

Personally, I think that’s some politician-level backpedalling. There’s really no ambiguity to the claim they make at 7:40. They say, “it will end 90% of the world’s ocean plastic pollution forever.” Same goes for the claim at 10:42. If there’s some ambiguity there that I missed, please point it out to me.*

Now, let me say just one more time, this video represents my criticisms of 4ocean. I don’t think I’ve misrepresented their company, and I think my criticisms are pretty solid. Nevertheless, you have every right to disagree with them. For example, maybe you think it’s not misleading of them to use the phrase “operated out of” to refer to a country where they’ve held a volunteer event. If so, fine. Buy a bracelet, tell your friends and family about 4ocean, make your own video pointing out everything wrong in mine. Ultimately, people will decide for themselves whether 4ocean deserves their support.

*The video has been taken down from 4ocean’s channel. Lest you think I took that clip out of context, here’s how the full exchange went.

    Reporter: What’s your vision? I mean, I know it’s like gangbusters, but . . .

Alex Schulze: No, of course, this is the proof of concept.

Andrew Cooper: Keep bringing this concept — prove the concept first, like Alex just said. Once it’s proven and we’ve got our systems and processes in place, scale that to the most highest [sic] impact places in the world, where all the plastic is pouring into the ocean.

Reporter: And you think you can eradicate it, because 90% comes—

Andrew: With the help of our customers, absolutely.

Im certan that they get more than 0.7% HOWEVER if buisnesses see that this pays off they will jump on the opputunity and they'll offer like 20 $ for 4 pounds,a lot more companies will join and they will compeat with eachother while cleaning the ocean

I almost ordered the bracelet, but the one pound of trash for $20. didn't seem like much. Any one of us can walk a beach and probably pick up one pound of trash very quickly. Volunteer your time.

  • Reply Zetetic Flat Earth September 7, 2019 at 9:14 pm

I totally agree with you, Danye. $20 for a stupid bracelet? It should be $5 the most. How long would it take for a person to walk on the beach and pick up a pound of plastic bottles? 10 minutes? And what is their cost if they "hire" volunteers to do it or cheap labor in Haiti? If you wanna help the environment, then do it yourself. Go to the local beach or street or park and pick up yourself some plastic bottles and trash. And buy a bracelet made out of silver or gold – the one you want and not some overpriced trash!

I just got a replied from 4Ocean shit they are hurt … this organization is becoming a Bernard Madoff child….. I agreed with all the word you mention in your videos Danye, at this point I don't see the point why people should buy these bracelets.. as this company is not there to show what they do with the money they have been trusted.. anyway I think is really clear … there is no transparency with the money and how they run their operation. of course, if they are a for-profit organization they don't need to show their financial status or what they do with the donation.

below is the replied they gave me:

We actually use over 99% of the profits to fund our entire operations including cleanups, boats, maintenance, technology and innovation, education and awareness programs for children, and more. Each bracelet purchased removes at least 1 pound of trash from the ocean and coastlines, but we cannot accept any donations directly. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

I feel a bit sad here, to me these videos that you’ve made seem to be a clever way for you to get more add revenue for yourself. By making this controversial video casting doubt on the integrity of the 4ocean founders your views went through the roof..

Its like a ‘what if??’ Video based on pure speculation that make people uncertain about supporting a Company that is actully doing something good for the invironment. Even if they were getting more than 0,7% its still a company that demonstrably cleans up plastic from our oceans.

Why dont you make a video about how the people who make your T-shirt MIGHT be a scam and making a fortune selling you a cheap shirt made in bangladesh? No it wouldn’t get you the views you want.

What you’ve done is cast uncertainty over a good initiative for your own personal gain, dan WTF..

  • Reply Danny Blue September 8, 2019 at 11:05 am

Wow, great job bud. Seriously vital reporting and I’m sure you feel really great “blowing the whistle” on a company that you’ve even said is “not a scam.”

This is the problem with the snowflake generation today. Everyone wants to put their 2 cents in, even when it doesn’t matter. The whole point is this. Is this company a scam? No. Then that’s it, period. If you like the products that they sell and want to support their mission of cleaning up the ocean while wearing their bracelets, go for it! If not, don’t!

People spend SO much time trying to break down all these amazing social enterprises that are trying to do good in the world, yet mindlessly shop for groceries and gas from companies that are not only donating ZERO money or time to helping the planet, they’re actively destroying it as well, and they don’t bat an eye.

Hey video guy, how many companies like the ones I mentioned above that you’ve supported over the past few months have you made videos about as well? I’m guessing zero. And THIS is what’s wrong with the world. These social justice warriors want their voices to be heard so they go after the very people that are ACTUALLY trying to help the planet and think they’re doing some revolutionary work that deserves a big pat on the back. Gimme a break. Go find something else to do with your time, I guarantee you’ve done nothing here but LIMIT the amount of good these guys can do with their business. Great work! 🙏

Did you ever touch on, or consider the cost it takes to turn the plastic into bracelets? Isn't that what the bracelets are supposed to be made from, or am I mistaken? Actually, that's something I'd be interested in knowing, personally. I highly doubt every piece of plastic they pull can be recycled into anything at all, so what happens to the stuff that can't be recycled? Do they then have to pay to have it incinerated or buried? I guess what I'm getting to, is your video seems to focus on the cost of the bracelet compared to how much it costs to remove one pound of plastic. You don't talk about the cost running their business, marketing campaign, etc. At least they're selling a product and not just operating as a non-profit charity, asking for donations, and only using 10% of every donated dollar toward their actual mission like so many other 'reputable' charities.

I think a better model is the one practiced by a small nonprofit organization called Compassion In Action Foundation (CIAF). They are a small nonprofit, 501(c)(3) that pays disadvantaged people to remove plastic pollution from coastal areas. The same 20 dollars that can be spent on a bracelet, which supposedly removes one pound of plastic trash, can instead be used to pay people directly to remove plastic trash. No bracelet is made, but instead of one pound of trash getting removed for twenty dollars, hundreds if not thousands of pounds of plastic trash are removed. ciaf4oceans.org is their website. There is massive poverty in the world and the environment needs to be cleaned. Employing people in need to clean plastic pollution makes sense. No one at CIAF takes a salary. Instead, the money is used to employ disadvantaged workers. The workers are the ones receiving salaries, not one of the CIAF board members or volunteers. Also, most plastic removed from coastlines and other areas is non recyclable trash, like food wrappers, plastic bags, Styrofoam and so forth. CIAF workers remove all the plastic trash. People must not be mislead into believing most plastic trash can be recycled and used for something else. Instead, it is dangerous for the environment, has no economic value, and must be removed.

The 4Ocean dudes look like they say "bro" a lot. And also high five a lot. I believe 0.7 percent is fine, but we can't assume the 98.6 remaining percent is all for the cleaning effort. There are investors who will want dividends, and a lot of money can be hidden away in trust funds and tied up in assets, like property. So, even if the main goal is money, they are helping clean the ocean no matter how small. But, instead of paying $20, you can easily collect 1 pound yourself next time you go to the beach. In fact, ANY body of water will do, especially rivers, streams, and lakes that lead to the ocean.

  • Reply James Dilworth September 11, 2019 at 11:25 pm

To get an insight into the success of 4Ocean's business it's insightful to take a look at the scale of their ad spend. They currently spend about $6000 per DAY on Facebook ads. This has added up to over $3million over the past year just on Facebook Ads alone. (They also advertise on national TV, Google and numerous other places).
    https://www.facebook.com/ads/library/?active_status=all&ad_type=all&country=US&q=4ocean&view_all_page_id=1852520761657982

A news interview they gave last year seemed to indicate they'd sold 1million bracelets in their first 18 months of operation. An impressive figure for sure, and it's probably a good bet they're continuing to grow and have done the same again in the year since. That would equate to an annual revenue of $20million. Very impressive for plastic bracelets!!!

So, where does this go? Well, this month they're promoting a partnership with Monterey Bay Aquarium. You can bet the ads with lots of pictures of cute sea otters will lead to a bumper month in sales. Monterey Bay Aquarium receives $25k out of this 'partnership', which is nice and all, but that's a 'drop in the ocean' compared to the upside for 4Ocean.

To be fair, it's nice to see the awareness they are generating around plastic pollution, and there's no doubt they are doing some good work to recover trash from waterways. It looks like they have people on payroll, and it looks like they're using this capital to expand their capabilities…. but as you note in your video, it's all very hard to tell.

Some might call this a scam, but I think you also have to admit…. it's marketing genius!

This video (and the first one) say a lot about the world we live in now, organizations try do do good, but it’s so rare they are constantly called out and called liers, even if 20$ isn’t worth one pound of trash, it is still more trash out of the ocean. If you don’t want to pay 20$ to help, go down to your local beach, park, or hiking trails. I’m probably not going to buy the bracelet, but it’s for the people who don’t have the time or strength do do the job themselves. Also, the more money the business gets, the cheaper, and more efficient the job is done. Even if only a portion of the money is directly cleaning the oceans, that full 20$ is being used to a full extent.

  • Reply OffGrid Wanabe September 12, 2019 at 9:52 pm

It doesn't matter the real criminals still don't pay to have their plastic picked up. Just sell more plastic and never pay for the trash they created and were paid for.

  • Reply M SANFER September 13, 2019 at 1:38 am

I was motivated to check information online about the work of 4Ocean. What they say they have achieved does not make to much sense to me. They say they have collected "a total of 6,465,749 lbs of trash off the oceans in less than 2 years." Floating garbage of course. Lets assume the hypothetical case, as an exercise, that it was the most common, which are the 20-ounce PEP type plastic bottles used for water, soft drinks, etc.
    Check this:
1.- These bottles weigh 0.74 ounces approx, meaning that 1 Lb equals 22 bottles
2.- If we multiply 6,465,749 Lb by 22 = 142,246,478 bottles collected from the sea… huge claim…Look at the next thing.
3.- A 40 foot shipping container has a nominal volumetric capacity for a total of 60,000 bottles (crushed, dented, broken, normal, etc)= 2,345 Lb = 2,371 units of 40’ shipping containers approx equivalent claimed to have been removed by 4Ocean, translated into 23 football fields, 7’10” height, OR a Cargo Vessel Panamax type (google it) fully loaded with 40’ containers of trash, in less than 2 years (https://4ocean.com/cleanups/)
    Sounds possible?

Easy to be drawn in by their bracelets, (first that appears on their website), however, their financial records demand transparency. The 4ocean vessel is so clean and freshly painted…has it really gone out to sea? Did not purchase a "misleading" bracelet, after following their website,: an environmental group that is for PROFIT?….One pound of trash for $20; I can and will do that within less than 2 hours. Like you said they are a 4profit company but they cleaned 100,000 pounds of trash in the first year. now they have been doing it for like three years and they have removed about 4.5 MILLION pounds of trash. I'm hoping that the founders receive my email and consider coming to my school to talk about this. If they say yes I will ask some of your questions, and report back to you. when I watched your first video I showed my principal and now im going to show him this. If 4Ocean is a scam they still have cleaned out so much trash. And when they said that 90% of the trash in our ocean can end forever. they ment 90% of that trach is entering through river mouths. they meant the hope they can have an impact on that 90%. It was alittle confusing at first but please consider pinning this comment because I want everyone to realize this.

  • Reply James Lock September 14, 2019 at 5:05 pm

To me the biggest question remains: how much plastic did they actually remove from the environment? BBB accreditation is just bought; they won't verify this. I'd be surprised if they even collected 10% of the 6 million pounds they claim they collected. And then, is this wet or dry? Is it all kinds of waste or is it just plastic? Was it actually collected on a beach or on a landfill 100 miles inland? Danye, it would be great if you can ask 4ocean to release their collection records!

Who's to say your not making this video to get more publicity for yourself? Not saying you are, but its hard for anyone on the outside of someone's brain to know their reasoning. Plus I'm jealous I'm not making money from YouTube 🙂 We really just need more companies like them, both non-profit and for profit. I think the bracelet is a great strategy business wise, it will catch on more than a documentary or book and has potential to become more popular faster. I feel like the 1lb thing is more like a catch phrase and a bare minimum. Of course they are doing way better than that. I'm fine with them making a ridiculous income if they are doing good for the world. Not many people can say they like their job, or that they feel like they are giving back to the community with their job and enjoy it. The ship is a good idea for multiple reasons, huge tax write off, help do more good. (technically their sentence said "in the water" and not operational). By no means am I saying we don't have to investigate further into the company before supporting them though. I agree its good to do your research.

Who tf cares if its a scam bro they r cleaning the oceans and bracelet helps found for advance machinery to help them with cleaning up bro, this is the type of guy to be an astronaut and still think the earth is flat

  • Reply JayG10 September 18, 2019 at 12:37 pm

It is true that 4ocean should not have said that their bracelets "save" the ocean. However, as a singular company that is only 2 years old, 1 pound every bracelet or 1/66,000 of the worlds rubbish in the ocean IS MUCH MORE THAN YOU'VE EVER DONE.
    Just kidding.
But seriously, at this stage, every action and every little step along the way of actually "saving" the environment, is important and useful and should not be pushed aside because one singular pair of young Americans could not put together a global effort to eradicate ocean rubbish.
But, true, they are hyping themselves up too much. But capitalism…

  • Reply Grant Smith September 18, 2019 at 9:56 pm

Why don't you focus on the pounds of trash that are getting taken out of the ocean instead of focusing on how much money these guys are making which seems to be your only concern? are you worried about the ocean or are you worried about somebody making more money than you? Jealous much?

  • Reply pax green September 19, 2019 at 12:47 am

Why are you so angry with 4ocean? Are you that mad that you paid $20 for a bracelet, or there is any other reason that you are not talking? It seams very odd for somebody to be so upset about a company that is doing exactly what they said they would do.

In the uk a company must inform every one to there financial takes and salaries for every member of staff so they should so people can actually trust their product and their mission

  • Reply GrownGamer1 September 21, 2019 at 3:22 am

4ocean offers the bracelet and 1 pound of plastic removed from the ocean for $20. As long as they keep their end of that deal, I don't see any ethical problem with this offer, which you initially agreed to. As long as they are removing the agreed upon amount of plastic from the ocean, why should they be obligated to show you exactly how much money they are making? They could be pocketing $10 from every $20 and using volunteer labor to do so and this would still be more ethical than a lot of business out there.

I think you are just pissed they got you for $40, I probs would be too 😛

Hey Danye I respectfully disagree 4Ocean is still doing good things even if they are scammers, but I what to grow up in a world that is beautiful and clean so if 4Ocean is scamming us so be it.
