Will the ocean ever run out of fish? – Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Jennifer Jacquet

    November 8, 2019

Fish are in trouble. The cod population off Canada’s East Coast
collapsed in the 1990s, intense recreational
and commercial fishing has decimated goliath grouper populations
in South Florida, and most populations of tuna
have plummeted by over 50%, with the Southern Atlantic bluefin
on the verge of extinction. Those are just a couple of many examples. Overfishing is happening
all over the world. How did this happen? When some people think of fishing, they imagine relaxing in a boat
and patiently reeling in the day’s catch. But modern industrial fishing,
the kind that stocks our grocery shelves, looks more like warfare. In fact, the technologies they employ
were developed for war. Radar, sonar, helicopters, and spotter planes are all used to guide factory ships
towards dwindling schools of fish. Long lines with hundreds
of hooks or huge nets round up massive amounts of fish,
along with other species, like seabirds, turtles, and dolphins. And fish are hauled up onto giant boats, complete with onboard flash freezing
and processing facilities. All of these technologies have enabled
us to catch fish at greater depths and farther out at sea than ever before. And as the distance and depth
of fishing have expanded, so has the variety of species we target. For example, the Patagonian toothfish
neither sounds nor looks very appetizing. And fishermen ignored it until
the late 1970s. Then it was rebranded and marketed
to chefs in the U.S. as Chilean sea bass, despite the animal actually
being a type of cod. Soon it was popping up in markets
all over the world and is now a delicacy. Unfortunately, these deep water fish
don’t reproduce until they’re at least ten years old, making them extremely vulnerable
to overfishing when the young are caught before they’ve
had the chance to spawn. Consumer taste and prices can
also have harmful effects. For example, shark fin soup is considered
such a delicacy in China and Vietnam that the fin has become
the most profitable part of the shark. This leads many fishermen to fill
their boats with fins leaving millions of dead sharks behind. The problems aren’t unique
to toothfish and sharks. Almost 31% of the world’s fish populations
are overfished, and another 58% are fished
at the maximum sustainable level. Wild fish simply can’t reproduce
as fast as 7 billion people can eat them. Fishing also has impacts
on broader ecosystems. Wild shrimp are typically caught by
dragging nets the size of a football field along the ocean bottom, disrupting or destroying
seafloor habitats. The catch is often as little as 5% shrimp. The rest is by-catch, unwanted
animals that are thrown back dead. And coastal shrimp farming isn’t
much better. Mangroves are bulldozed to make room
for shrimp farms, robbing coastal communities of storm
protection and natural water filtration and depriving fish of key
nursery habitats. So what does it look like to give
fish a break and let them recover? Protection can take many forms. In national waters,
governments can set limits about how, when, where,
and how much fishing occurs, with restrictions on certain
boats and equipment. Harmful practices, such as bottom
trawling, can be banned altogether, and we can establish marine reserves
closed to all fishing to help ecosystems restore themselves. There’s also a role for consumer awareness
and boycotts to reduce wasteful practices, like shark finning, and push fishing industries towards
more sustainable practices. Past interventions have successfully
helped depleted fish populations recover. There are many solutions. The best approach for each fishery
must be considered based on science, respect for the local communities
that rely on the ocean, and for fish as wild animals. And then the rules must be enforced. International collaboration is often
needed, too, because fish don’t care about our borders. We need to end overfishing. Ecosystems, food security, jobs, economies, and coastal cultures all depend on it.

Ep.9 Wild Jumping Sharks, Hand-lining 30kg Spanish Mackerel & Grouper – FISHING THE WILD NT

    November 5, 2019

The Northern Territory’s coastline is one of the healthiest marine environments on earth. The biological diversity and the numbers of
marine creatures is almost unmatched worldwide. One of the signs of a healthy marine ecosystem
is the amount of sharks present, and there is one particular spot in the Northern Territory
that has more sharks than anywhere else. At the very top of the Wessel Islands in North
East Arnhem Land is a three kilometre stretch of reef that is home to an extraordinary number
of aggressive sharks. They are here because of the pristine water
and the abundance of food. This particular stretch of reef is a place
called Cape Wessel, the very tip of this dramatic chain or islands that knives out 100 kilometres
off the Northern Territory’s mainland coast. It is sacred Aboriginal land with deep cultural
significance and a place that has to be respected. Its prehistoric rock formations create an
eerie underwater landscape of deep drop-offs, coral reefs, cracks, tunnels and deep holes
that seem to go down forever. It is a place that you feel like you haven’t
been invited. It is also one of the most remote and wild
places on earth and has some of the best big Spanish Mackerel fishing in the world. Because of this there is one family of professional
Spanish mackerel fishermen that venture out there every year to brave the hostile conditions
to chase the mighty Spaniard. Dad Bruce Davey, mum Juanita, their children
Elsbeth and Tiger and Tiger’s wife Prue all lead a unique lifestyle living aboard the family
mothership Wildcard. The Daveys have been professional fishermen
for generations forging a living off the wild north Australian waters for collectively around
a hundred years. Raised on the ocean they have all lived an
adventurous life beyond comprehension to most people. Professionally line fishing for Spanish Mackerel
is an adrenalin-loaded dangerous form of hand- to-hand combat fishing. Its not for the half-hearted. It’s physical and takes a lot skill and understanding
about the ocean and the animals that live in it. Because of the sharks, mackerel fishing at
Cape Wessel has a unique set of challenges. Unless they are landed quickly the Spaniards
are ripped to shreds in a vicious game of tug-of-war between fisherman and shark. These battles are brutal and it is not uncommon
for the sharks to get airborne as they attack with so much force, and it is no wonder they
have given this place the nick-name “Cape Carnage”. The Wildcard family are some of our closest
friends and they have always wanted Simmo and I to join them and experience first hand
their way of catching Spaniards and to witness some of the craziest shark behaviour
we are likely to ever see. So this week we have decided to take the three
day journey living aboard the Wildcard to see first hand this form of fishing and the
Jumping Sharks of Cape Carnage. alright Lets go fishin Yeah! Here we go. Put this one on. So this is a skirted garfish tie one hook
in and a bit of wire through the garfish’s eye and that skirt comes down over his nose
and those colours are proven attractants basically make it look pretty and thats it. So Cape Wessel mackies are bigger than other mackies around the country? These are the horses? Yeah we call it Cape Carnage. Big fish. Big sharks. Big everything. I was looking under the main boat there just
before we jumped out and there was just sharks everywhere already and we haven’t even started
processing. You can get in even closer and get out of
the “shark zone” but sharks have really honestly evolved here to fish off the backs of boats
    – they know. I just had a hit then. I’m getting out of the way of – here we go! Come on Juanita. Are you calling a good one here? Yep calling a good one. Woah! Shark on him? Go Juanita! Here we go….. He’s got a shark on him for sure This is a tough battle Did you see that shark? Yep, here we go. He is still on it! Woah. Scheez! Woah that is a massive mackie…
and a shark was on him straight away Here we go! She is on. Another one. Wow. Another goodie. Another one woah! We are in trouble. Everywhere here. Oh no! I don’t think I’ve got a whole one in yet Woah There are just sharks and mackerel everywhere here at the moment. Bloody sharks Arhhhhh! Woah! Ah thank God So this is why they call it Cape Carnage there is just sharks everywhere you can see them
below the boat when Juanita pulls up the mackerel. Thats a pretty common occurrence Juanita,
    that there? Yup
That a bigger one, look at the size of those teeth there. So this is a place you definitely don’t want
to fall in around. But um, is there some days when they are not
here at all? Or are they always here? The sharks are always here but sometimes they
are more brutal than others. Ok well thats just incredible. Alright
She is back in. You are kidding me! Look at that! Holy dooley She’s on Fletch see if you can get that Here we go! We are on here Fletch. Yes. Go Prue! Hang on yep we are on here again! Holy F%^# Got him, Got him. Should I move? Nah Woohoo. That is what happens. Wow
Oh there is a shark. Holy hell. Oh yep yep we’re on. Look at that. Far out
No this is a bit of the scary bit for Simmo, oh off again. That my friend is why we call it Cape Carnage. Don’t drop it it is very sharp. Thats all thats left of one mackie his bottom
jaw. Have a look at that And those teeth there they are designed for
the mackie just to slice into the bait and cut it in half
We are on again! And I don’t want these teeth to hit my leg
or my femoral artery here. Thats going in. Do I have to change sides? You’re right Woohoo. Go this is a biggie! You beauty! This is the worrying bit oh oh a shark on
him right here. Go girl. yes. That’s the worrying bit for me. You beauty! Geez Yeah! Ok so immediately killed him. Brain spike him and cut his throat. that is clinical. Clinical. So this is the set-up, we have go our VB cord
or like 4mm rope and it has actually got a bungy strap there. That is the shock absorber. So when the fish hits it is not going to pull
itself out straight away its going to take a bit of the pressure and then this goes back
13 metres, is that right? 13 or 14 metres. Look at that one. Oh man its fun. I love watching it. Look at that woah! Here we go we are on! Here we go! Come on I’ll get one here, I had a hit. Go girl, there it is! Yes. Rock it! Geez
Thats a shark up it. Oh Jesus Christ. No just leave it leave it! Ok Oh yeah a shark’s got it Now you are pulling in a fish and a shark. Holy hell. Jesus! What? Oh yep I got it! F&%*ing hell. Righto be careful. Remember what I taught ya. Look at that! I’ve got him. Alright are you good? I’m good. A bit slippery. Be careful now. It’s a bit slippery. Alright. What is going on? Shark on him. A shark on him. Shark on him. A shark has got him. Alright now land it. Woohoo! Bang! Debut! Well done. My God I slipped on the floor there and started
heading towards the drink and there’s sharks everywhere Commercial debut. Far out that is a lot harder than it looks. Oh no! This is epic! There is just no way you can get them in hey? Thats why I did giggle when you said that
you wanted to use a rod. That is just absolute carnage. It’s carnage you ‘re right. How long have you been fishing this country
for Juanita? Ah here probably about 25 years. It still scares the willies out of me. Do you still see things that you are surprised
by? Yeah. Don’t tell me a whole one! Don’t tell me. We got one. Yay, we got a whole one woohoo. Mackerel are faster than sharks thats why
um they’ll still feed. Sharks don’t normally get to eat mackerel. But these sharks have evolved to learn that
they’ll get and easy feed hanging off the back of our boats. So this shark’s behaviours is pretty specific
to these islands? Yeah. A couple of other spot where we fish that
they are like this. But no where near as frightening as here. So the sharks are thick here at Cape Wessel
as we know – Cape Carnage as they call it. That is a mackerel that is not going to go
for commercial use that is going to feed the crew tonight. But look at the size of that bite that was
a 2.5m shark all over him, he had a couple of friends as well. Man this is adrenalin. Adrenalin. Hang on I think you are on there girl, and
I’m on too you beauty. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Alright its making a run. Wait up wait up don’t pull any more. F*%^ing hell. I can see why they use gloves. Here we go we have got another fully here
good work girl. Nutso. Oh no. Was that a shark right there? Pretty excited pretty nervous too actually. Because I know how fast how hard these guys
can pull and I know how hard the sharks can pull. Part of me wants to hook up part a little
part of me doesn’t. Thats perfectly normal mate. If it makes you feel any better I pooped myself,
I crapped my dacks every time I come out here. Really
Yep And you have been doing it for 30 years. Yep
That really instills confidence in me too. Yeah but come on have a look at the size of
my arms mate. These are just show muscles Juanita. They’re just show muscles. You have a little bit more horsepower than
me mate. Mackerel have got a ‘wanted poster’ of Juanita
underneath the water. Dead or alive. They’ve had a few goes at reefing me in. You’re on. Here we go. Do you want to have a crack? Ah… Alright. Ok
Go ready. Oh he is off I think. Go! Go! Go! Go! How did you get pantsed that time? Oh no! That happened pretty quickly. I was wondering why I was I was doing so well. He had no propeller. Thats right gone. It’s just incredible. The sharks around here are just absolutely
insane the amount that they are on. And like Juanita said they have actually trained
themselves to feed like this. This is actually a natural feeding process
for them now. Coming behind these boats they obviously know
the sound of the engines and will just hang around for one of these guys to be disabled
by getting hooked up and then thats the only time that they are fast enough to catch mackerel. Two Three That was a big one. Mackie Bae, like that Salt Bae – Mackie Bae Yep. Just drop mackerel like this. I made a mistake on
that one, I got the gut cavity and that side is beautiful. So when it is done like this you have lost
the tail so it is harder to fillet. So then you have just got to find wherever
you can start and take it through and especially for the way we fillet once you have lost that tail it makes it harder to process. So it’s beautiful if you can just pick that
white line on the belly. Ah is that the rule, ok. The white line on the belly, right I’ll remember
that. So you flip it over, same thing I might get
that whole fillet so you just try to take it back there. And that one you can see the difference in
the flesh. So that there versus this one here which hasn’t
been bitten by a shark. That looks like you have just caught it 5
minutes ago. That one’s stressed. So its started pumping adrenalin through its
body and you can see that even though we’ve pulled that in in 30 seconds it looks like
it is older than this one is but they are about the same time. What makes that look older the lighter colour? Yeah and see how it starting to get a bit
fluffy along here? So this one here, I wouldn’t that doesn’t
pass my quality control. So that one has go to be sliced and we can’t
put that in our pro box. So it’s got to be perfect like that. Does everyone have standards like this? No no I think our standards are high. But there are definitely people who adhere
to the same standards as what we do. Quality is everything if your reputation takes
one batch of sub-par fish and your name is mud after that. How long have you been doing this Tige? Well I was on the boat from 2 to 3 weeks old
and I’m 28 this year so I’ve been here pretty much the whole time. Hey! It shows. Filleting for 6 months Great with a knife. Great with a knife. Holy shit. (cameraman) I did that for Mike’s benefit. I’ve been out here for 40 …. never dropped
a knife. So thats the perfect example of what not to
do. And all this stuff that you are talking about
in terms of the quality of the fish and the way that you process it.. that apply to all
species of fish? Exactly. Especially what Juanita was saying with the
brain spiking. If you brain spike every fish you are just
guaranteed that the quality is going to be twice as good as if you didn’t. Because we have been doing it wrong Simmo
and I a lot of the time because we just neck a fish straight away thinking that it needs
its brain to operate the heart to keep pumping out the blood. So there could be truth behind that I’m not
going to definitively say that that is not the case I know with tuna they cut them off
here and let the brain pump the blood out. I just know from what we do with mackerel. Its also its more a safety principal as well
because if you have got a mackerel going spastic in front of you the first thing that you want
to do is shut that fish down. Quieten it because it becomes safer then and
then you can deal with everything after that. Its also cleanliness you can see if you keep
your boat as clean as possible you are preparing food for the populations. So now it will go into our wash tub there
which has got constantly running water and that water. Yep
and that water just washes the fish washes the last bits of blood off. And then after that it goes into the boxes
and straight down to the freezer. And thats the thing, the thing that I’ve seen
so far is this whole process is that there is not one element thats not designed to keep
that mackie as fresh as possible. The whole process is designed that way I suppose
is it. Safety and quality. They are the two things. There you go, if you ever see Wildcard Wild
Caught mackie on the menu I’d advise you to have a crack at that. They are not over exaggerating when you use
‘wild’ twice. Here we go. Whack him in there Morgs. I’m going to go after this. Here we go. Bull shark. Thats a bull shark. Go Grab that frame behind you. Look at that whoah. Sharks in here. He’s bitten that rope off. He’s bitten that rope in half. This is actually where Morgs… I don’t know whether you saw series one for
Fishing the Wild this is where Morgs fell in the drink. Because one of these mackerel came through
the boat, Morgs actually had to jump out of the way to avoid it. The severity of the situation at that time. I’m scared. He’s got it. Simmo… don’t pull on that rope. Its giving me the heeby geebies here a bit. Ocean whaler, black tip reef shark, bronze
whaler, lemon shark and bull shark. Look at that one, there the bull shark there. thats a bull shark. There the scary ones. Massive massive bull shark. There is another one look at that. Oh geez
Just the weight of these things alone, you can imagine if in amongst that and had two
of these guys pulling in different directions you are going in half very quickly. Thats awesome. That is so cool They got the line. What are you going to do? Pull one up? Just an insane amount of sharks out the back
here all the time and they’ll hit that pretty quickly. Whoah. Geez. Oh it a big bull sharks down there too. And they are the bad boys around here tiger
sharks and bull sharks Juanita? All the sharks with teeth are the bad ones
there Morgs. It’s just absolutely incredible. Whoah
It’s just carnage. We had a GoPro in the water and a shark came
along and just ate the GoPro. So there it is. Yeah they are eating rope they are eating
absolutely anything that touches the water. So if one of use just puts any limb in there
jumps in – over. So thats why its really important boat rules
to have. Stay in boat. Stay in boat, that’s the biggest rule. …the lighthouse thats going as well its started… ..he’s head-butted the side of the dinghy.. …just totally, just the one time, just totally supportive…. …he’s an absolute wanker…. ..yeah thats Robbie yeah…. Well done Prue that’s lovely. Remarkable days seem to just continuously
just stack up on one another out here in the Territory. If you make the effort and you put yourself
in wild places well, inevitably, wild things are going to happen. Fishing the Wild has always been more about
the wild then it has the fishing. Our love for being in it and our passion for learning
more about it. And being around people who share the same

    Strongest Men VS Strongest Fish

    August 14, 2019

so guys we got three of the strongest men on earth got Devon Larrick ex-special forces armwrestling champion the world juji mu food the only guy in the world I know that can do this right here and we got Lane Norden powerlifting champion and the amberjack champion as well yes so our goal today is push the winners we’re going to try to catch Goliath Reapers in a way of no number four strongest men versus strongest fish you guys ready yeah [Music] the rules of this competition are simple biggest fish wins obviously but here is the catch the rod can never touch the gun if the rod touches the gun oh it’s strike one if you get three strikes you’re out juji’s gonna go first he’s ready I didn’t even warm up yet me into a thousand-pound squad fine right okay I’m fine I mean you got compression sleeves on yeah ready hey nervous yeah because everyone else around me is nervous to smile even bleed through to me all right here we go I’d be super nervous if I was you Jersey yeah just like catching a car right that’s the bait right there Devin you’re gonna be back here if the line snaps I want you to grab him to make sure he doesn’t hit his head yeah now if we’re getting pulled forward and we’re getting pulled in I need you to grab his shoulders yeah hold on tight okay so it’s kinda like a seesaw all right so either piece we’re gonna go in or he’s gonna fall back we got you Jersey scared buddy yeah because you’re talking about how many people are it’s gonna take to keep you from flying into the water all right let’s go come on all right all right come on oh yeah all right explain to us how it felt when he actually pulled you to the gunnel this is nothing you could do about it it’s just your viewing pulled in the water and the only thing you’re hoping for is that the people holding you so much lactic acid in my hand right now right yeah my my wrist is just yeah from just holding on pass the torch to ya man I’m so excited to try now now that I see kind of what we’re dealing with dude you didn’t die that’s a good thing I see that it can pull you right over the boat so I hope I got a spotter but I think really the main thing is surviving that initial minute right I didn’t survive it I guess that is the main thing I mean if I how long do I gotta go to like get ahead of you how long what’s your longest armwrestling match you’ve ever done probably like one of my good ones is like probably Marcia Barbosa like probably up around two minutes two minutes and then that turned my lips purple no yeah yeah like anything over twenty seconds is an eternity okay and what what would it tell anything it will take the real this bad boy five minutes all right there you go more than twice as much as a match with Marcia yeah okay well let’s do it let’s do it [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it’s like we had him and we had a bit and then he decided to really push explain now you both stop full power voice it wasn’t stoppable for me you know it’s hard to gate when something stronger than you it’s hard to know exactly how much stronger is it like for me it’s taken me over like if we weren’t here would you’ve gone in the water yeah yeah no I that would it would it would win right so I can’t really count it I would like like I feel like I’ve already learned something like I got to get the plate lower I gotta get more lean like early because if you’re like not set and it’s done here it’s like you can’t recover yeah you’re right yeah so it’s I feel like I have anticipated it’s so much fun so guess what it’s lanes turn now that’s pretty confident over there look at that gonna be tough be real tough but you know me I like a challenge guys it’s lame norden’s turn he’s pretty confident I would say he’s got confidence with them freedom fight him why not I almost got dragged in with you I know I almost broke my arm yeah let’s do it let’s do it I got it I got a prevent earlier it’s like you don’t know what you’re messing with and you have to assume it’s a really bad thing because you can’t see it [Music] learn a lot of comments over the years people are like hey the rods never supposed to touch the gunnel you need to fight in a harness or play you don’t know what you’re doing I go look I’ve been used for a long time okay and when you push that much pressure this guy my size not possible you want to catch the fish your Roger Stefano that’s where you put this tubing on the rod right here this vinyl tubing that protects the rod from getting scratches rock from breaking and the boat from being scratched and it looks weird but that’s a mandatory requirement so the rod stay in the boat stay safe and you’ll see after Alain does this vent over here and switches and do my technique I’m gonna catch on real quick for you guys and it’s a lot easier but you got a gun on the rod I’m gonna see if they can do it don’t cut on the raw but it’s nice I got to tell you I’m a little stressed out spotting you actually really you’re like one of those bench pressors that if we just touch the bar they’re gonna freak out okay because it didn’t count they can fit come on this is all you bro this is your year [Music] the plates up get the plate down real real whirlpool it’s just he’s done he’s done for his belly up bro oh I’m jumping in there we go yeah I’m really bummed because I felt like I had him in a really good spot I had the rod in the right spot I was getting some line and then just my feet just went right from under me no I totally slick yeah really yeah my just my left foot with and it was gone and then that rah hit the cuddle and it moved the plate on me yeah and then what’s that plate got it over here I mean that it’s like you can’t do anything yeah you’re help you know so thankfully good spotters Devin and Juji they help me out this comes back on target there’s no solo fishing out here you can’t do it by yourself I mean these guys are monsters I’m a little guy and I can tell you I can’t do by myself and ask them and can you guys do it by yourself no no I mean you know three of us together it’s my turn we’re gonna do it the way you vote me see me doing on my show [Applause] oh yeah you made it look so easy man I was tryna be the bait up because I wanted to see cuz they said this Wonder Adolphus everyone else could see stuff but I was real enough he smoked it taught me off guard [Applause] [Music] Monster Goliath Groupers with NFL Linebacker Sam Barrington – 4K

    August 12, 2019

(dynamic electronic whooshing) – Alright guys, we’re here today
with Sam Barrington, again. – Yeah. – He got a taste of a big shark, and now he’s hungry for more. You ready to do a big Goliath Grouper? – [Sam] Yeah, I’m ready. – Alright man, let’s do it. – Let’s go. (dynamic electronic music) – There go fish on, fish on, whooo! It’s a big Bonito! Oh, man. Ooh! Come on Sam, come on,
it’s a big one, dude! You gotta catch it quick man, or the sharks are gonna eat ’em. That’s a big one, dude. You got it, you got it, you got him. That’s a huge Bonito! Come on man, come on, come on. Awww, he got off, (beeping). There we go; Bonito on, yep. Nice. – [Sam] Come on, Johan. No more pretty boy polo shirt. – Oooh, there’s a, there’s a fish. Do a fish shake up. Tossing me a double-up right now. Here we go, here we go. Double, double high, doubled
up, doubled up, doubled up. Oh! Come on, come on, come on, come on. – [Sam] There we go. – Whoo!
    – Wow! – Sam, that one’s yours?
    – Oh yeah. – Alright guys, double-header,
Bonitos chaos right here. Oh, he’s go a fish on. – [Sam] Come one, Jake, let’s go baby. – [Josh] He’s got a
Bonito, he’s got a Bonito. – [Sam] Come on, bump it! – Here we go, here we go. – [Sam] Bump it, bump it! – I’m bumping, man. – I don’t, I don’t think
he’s woken up yet, man. – Oh, he woke up! – He just woke up, he just woke up. (cheering) Ah, there goes all your work. – [Richard] Come on! – He’s still going, he’s still going. Alright buddy, let’s go, come on. Dude, that dolphin’s, that
dolphin’s gonna eat your Bonito. Dolphin’s gonna eat your
Bonito, man, come on, come on. Pump, pump, pump, pump, pump. I see him, I see him, I see him. – Let’s go, let’s go! (clapping) – Alright, look at that Bonito
guys, look at that Bonito. – Yeah, this hard work man. – That is hard work. – Thanks to my man Josh up here. – Alright, hey dude, I’m gonna
put this back in the water and we’re gonna get a Goliath right now. – Okay. I feel like King Kong! (laughing) – Albino King Kong. – Alright, Sam, it’s time
to catch a Goliath Grouper. Now, you’ve caught the Bonitos. How did the Bonitos fight? – They fought good. You know, Bonitos are fun, man. It’s fun catching Bonitos. It’s quick. It’s a little quick, tough battle, and you know they’re small
    – TIt’s tough, right? – But they’ll, they’ll
fight you, and I like it. – Now, we’re gonna drop
that down for bait. – Yeah. – On this guy right here, dude. You ready? – Yeah, it’s my old buddy. – I’m gonna harness you in. – Alright. – And we’re gonna catch a
Goliath Grouper right now. – Let’s do it.
    – Let’s do it. – I’m the spotter. – That’s the hook, Sam. – Wow. – That’s the hook, guys. – That’s a big one, yeah. – So this is technique?
    – You ready? This is all technique.
    – Can I see the hook again? – So as the fish pulls harder, okay, you see how, remember the technique, how you’re sitting on the rod? As it pulls harder, sit deeper. – I’m not nervous. – You’re not nervous? – I’m not nervous. – Every time I put that bait in the water, and I’m holding that rod, I am nervous. My heart rate gets about 20 beats higher. – I’m gonna tell you why I’m
nervous, I’m not nervous. I don’t mean to “I’m nervous”, but it’s because I don’t know any better. That’s the fun part about it. – Okay.
    – You know better. – Alright, you ready? – Yeah. – Here we go. Oh man, my, my heart rate’s beating cause I know what’s gonna happen. – (laughing) – There we go, he’s got it, he got it. Hold on.
    – Holy snacks. – Oh man, hold on, hold
on, hold on, hold on. He dropped it, he dropped it. Let ’em gun, let ’em gun,
let ’em gun, let ’em gun it. Oh! It rode up. The bait was too big. – Hey, if ya’ll only felt how that felt. It felt like a car was going downhill, and I was attached to it. I swear to you. – Here we go. Get ready. Oh my gosh, look at this bro,
it’s gonna happen right now. Watch this. – Heyah! Aiyah! – [Johan] Oh! – You got him, dude. – Only if ya’ll knew. Only if you knew. – Alright you got him man, you got him. – [Richard] Come on, Sam! – Is it double gear? You got a mode where I can use both gears? Look at that. – He’s moving the whole boat. – [Johan] He’s playing guitar. There he goes. (laughing) – [Richard] Come on, Sam,
you got it, you got it. – [Josh] There he is dude. – [Ricard] Ha, holy (beep). – [Sam] Hey, bring that on my Snapchat. (beeping) – [Josh] There we go! Look at that, guys. That’s a big fish. Woohoo!
    – Hey, yeah. – Alright, let’s release this fish. There we go. Go, go, go, go, go. Sam, how was that, bro? – Hey, it was, you know, when
you compare that to a shark, it didn’t have as much stamina as a shark, but the power was way more
    – Intense. – Intense than a shark, I promise you. But that was fun. That was fun. – That’s a warm-up fish. Now we gotta get you
a four or 500 pounder. – [Sam] Let’s go, let’s go. – Let’s do it man. We gotta re-anchor. That fish pulled us off anchor. – Man. – I see a Goliath down
there, I see a Goliath. – You see a Goliath?
    – Oh yeah. Boom! He just got it, he just got it, dude! – Alright, I got this, I got this. – [Johan] Yeah, show
me the stance you have. Counterweight. – That’s a big one,
dude, that’s a big one! He ate it right on the surface, dude. How sick was that? – Back up, I got it. I got you, I got you. – You got me, you got me? He’s going. I see him. That’s a big one I think. Oh, yeah, there he is. I see him. It’s right here, right here. There he is. It’s a bigger one, dude. There we go, dude. That’s a, that’s a 300
pounder right there. 250, 300. Alright, look at that fish, Sam! That’s a Giant! That’s a Giant, dude. Wow. Here we go, here we go. Push it’s head down, push it down. Dude.
    – Put it right here. That was awesome, bro. – Yeah. – They fight hard, don’t they? – Real hard. – The scary thing, Sam, is there’s seven, 800 pounders down there. That’s 300. Imagine fishing was three times that size, and that’s how big they are. Johan, what’s the biggest
fish you ever caught? – It was a sardine, just
a couple minutes ago. – Sardine, or didn’t you catch a Bonito? – Oh, that’s the one, yeah. – Okay, so I have a Bonito that you caught for bait right now, okay? And it’s gonna get
eaten by a huge Grouper. You ready?
    – Yeah, it’s fine. – Alright, here we go. – (beeping) – Come on, come on, get that reel. (laughing) What is this? What, what kind of nonsense is this? Why is it pulling so hard? – I’ll pull you hard. Oh man, you need to train for this. – Come on, come on, come on. What, the belt ripped? You serious?
    – Yeah. – Oh my god. – [Richard] Dayum. – Belt just broke, guys. – Come on, don’t give up. – [Josh] Come on, come on,
more forward, more forward. – More forward a little bit, I got you. (ooohing) – Look at that thing, dude. Look at the size of that Grouper. Look at that fish! That’s a Giant, dude! There he goes, there you go. Go down, go down, go down. Go on then, go, go. There he goes. Alright, so we’ve caught
three Groupers on this line, so I cut it. I got a recrimp now. Mono, when you put that
much pressure on it, continues to crack and fracture; so after so many fish, you have to retie or recrimp or something cause otherwise the
line’s just gonna break. You ready?
    – Nope. – You’re not ready; are you nervous? – Yep. – Okay, I like that. He’s nervous. He’s been getting it.
    – Yep. – What’s the biggest fish you ever caught? – I just caught it. – Bonito, okay, so we got the
Bonito down there for bait. Here we go. Reel, reel, reel, reel. You got him, reel, reel, reel, reel. Reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel. Come on, come on, come on, come on. – You got my back, man? – [Sam] I got you, don’t worry. – That’s a big one, dude,
that’s a big one, dude. Oh my gosh. He’s pulling, he’s pulling a
120 pounds drag right now, guys I’m thumbing the pull. He’s pulling the boat forward. Come on, reel, reel, reel, reel. This might be a 500 pounder. What happened to my hat? Did it fall off? – [Sam] Nah, right here man. – Thanks. Gotta get my hat on, there we go. Come on man, get it done, get it done. There he is. It’s a good one, man. There we go! Nice one, dude. Alright, guys, let’s release this fish. There he goes. Whoo! That was awesome. Dude, how does that feel, catching the biggest fish of your life? – Listen (heavy breathing). – Don’t worry man, it’s
always an awkward shake after a big fight like that. – You like popsicles?
    – Yeah, yeah. – They like popsicles too. Let’s grab a big, frozen one. – Okay.
    – Let’s do that. – [Sam] Let’s do it. – It’s a hot day, guys. The Goliath’s gotta
cool down too, you know. There we go. They love popsicles, man. Oh, that’s a good one. Let ’em eat it, let ’em
eat it, let ’em eat it. Come on man, you got it,
you got it, you got it. It might be the, it might be a Giant. Let ’em go back down. Go on, go on back in there. I see ’em. Come on, you got, you got this. Right there, right there. We got it, we got it, we got it. That’s a big one! That’s the one you want, Sam. – [Sam] Hugh, come on, come on, come on. – [Josh] Oh, it’s Giant. Sam, are you officially tired now? – Yeah, I’m tired man. – Exhausted? How many did you catch? – What was that, five or four? – [Josh] Five, four or five? – Today was a great day, man. Today was a great day, plentiful day. – Well, you know what, dude, let’s end the day with
this fish right here. Let’s let him go.
    – Let him go. – This little 400 pound fish. Push him down. – [Sam] Pfew. So glad you came down again, dude. – Yeah. – You caught the big sharks. Now you got the big Goliaths. – Plentiful day, man, we caught about, we caught as a group, we caught about, what, 15 today? – We caught a lot. – We caught a lot.
    – Caught a lot of fish today. And we only caught ’em
in what, three hours? – Yeah, in addition to that,
I learned a lot today too. That was the most fun part. – Yeah, I mean every time, you know, I want to get you a better fisherman, man. – Yeah.
    – Let me ask you a question. What’s next in your career of fishing? You caught the big Bull Shark. You caught Goliath Grouper. What’s next? What do you want next?
    – You tell me. I consider you like my sensei of fishing. – Alright, how ’bout this?
    – Mr. Miagi. – What’d you say? – How bout, how bout we plan, I want to get you on some
sport fish, Tarpon and that, but let’s do a Bahamas
trips soon, coming up. – Okay.
    – Let’s go there. Catch a Grinder, a big Tiger shark. – Let’s do it, let’s do it. – Let’s do that man. – I’ll make sure I’m properly
conditioned for that, alright. – Yeah, that’s gonna be a heck of a fight. That’s gonna pull as hard as the Goliath, but for an hour. – Yeah. – It’s brutal. – I’ll be ready for it. – Alright, man, hey, thanks
for coming out, dude. – No problem, man, thanks for having me. – Hope you guys enjoyed this video, and we’ll see you next time. – [Announcer] Blacktip H
