Norfolk Broads: Trees, Leaks & Epoxy – Boat Vlog Ep 75

    September 11, 2019

well what do you know it’s snowing yes
cold tonight oh how exciting winter boating snowing
freezing your nuts off this is fantastic got a parcel how’s that shop frontage
hey we gotta get out of there now some frozen and muddy and last time you saw
one of those tree what they say about life having no mercy moment I need
moment I leave Sun comes out it’s lovely and more I’ve just been freezing since
Friday there you go got the good east so we’re gonna have a little trip down to buxom get showered up and then we’re
going down to Barton broad put my mouse tough thing that’s why they call it
cracked Miller so I’ve been told I mentioned in one of my videos I’m
stuck on the other side of the bridges floods about trees coming down so you
can see this one here it’s quite a common sight actually but you really
wouldn’t want to be in your eye when that happens not at all not at all some ol bucket is more up down there oh you gotta watch out for these cheese
man I don’t know I pawned the water that goes to find out hey have you gone
through one problem that’s how I changed them with the very sound of water not
the middle of the winter I can assure you not good it was so windy the other
night every night unaware he came for just sunny turned up a tow and
knew like crazy and then it’s gone and even myself down in the town I pulled
out blue tarp a tree there’s no real solution for it really because these
trees up here I forget most of our now but did you see they grow like weeds and the ground just lifts up like carpet so
it’s not going thing I mean if it wasn’t for brought authority and the
Environment Agency or whoever is responsible for digging them how this
river would come to a standstill put it down quickly and once the river stopped flowing then
it starts flooding everywhere so it’s a crucial it should brew shall bit of
river this to keep clear and it’s not only about navigation when flooding if
you can see that little Robin dispensary I want to beautiful day to be on the
roads but you often wild Lauren’s but as a
perfect example that’s a big-ass tree as well perfect
example of why Maureen excellent sweets there’s not such a great idea there’s another one there all of their
aware if you you learn be careful sure awesome vehicle pump
these out there okay here is your urgent report there
isn’t there’s enough loss bone snapping the
tree see I’ve never seen this anywhere before mmm that looks a bit more like it
that’s going in the furling the further these are the compression fittings the
wedges no sorry let me start that again these are the wedges that go in the
compression fittings someone called stay lock so I’m gonna
called Norseman and this son called hi Maude which I like because they separate
the strands better but there seem to be a lot more expensive this is 20 quid
worth here believe it or not so you know bursting certainly isn’t cheap but once
these are done if they’re done properly they’re supposed to be stronger than the
actual rope itself can’t quite figure how that works from the ego so we’re
getting there and now we just need a day like today
now we can start get it all put back together yeah if you look familiar with
these it’s pronounced stay on the right side of winter now I wonder if you can
see their rainbow one of those lovely winter days today
and it’s come right after very wet previous day so I know I’ve got a leak
so I’ve got my hatch apart take the wood off I’m gonna get a brand new piece in
there I’m gonna pops you the hell out of it make sure this baby is there’s
nothing more irritating and having a leak on a boat especially in the winter
one is tricky to fix you know nothing will go off and set misses a day like
this but also the fact that I’ve come to realize that when you have a leak on the
boat it can actually ruin your boat you can do so much damage you can destroy
your bulkheads ultimately so we’re quite anal when it comes to leaks now that’s
just a tip and I’m gonna get it fixed so lovely sunny day we’re busy I’m working
on the boat I wonder if you can see that seeing on the hatch that’s right where’s
gonna drop down done what we can do cordelia rigging at the moment so we’re
going the library work on the forum so over today and I hope it’s nice and
sunny where you are this hatch is in the process of being restored that’s why it
looks like it’s all being bleached and you know it does it’s actually beatboxing up in nice and sexy it’s
windy as hell folks the weather but it’s not all doom and gloom because if you
hadn’t chucked down I wouldn’t have discovered a leak here looking a bit
messy at the moment but this is the early stages here I built up some layers
of marine fly here and there all the process of being a pop seed and the idea
is and the water comes down here to stop it from getting too far down years ago a
hole in the to the wood that’s in here all right
keepers trouble for tonight I think nearly there
almost water type very pleased with that it’s nice for job comes together right
come in the market for a new jib or a couple of spare ones I’ve had a quote
for new jib and it ranges anywhere from about 800 to
1,200 pounds so costly that happening for a while I can see online you can buy
secondhand ones I thought might be best to go online and ask us somebody watch
it might know somewhere what’s got to be 13 what’s the longest bit enough with
the leech I think the laugh is 35 inches 28 30 yes
the foot is 13 the Meech is 28 and the left/right interested and it makes perfect sense
almost well it’s very moral early evening but I decided because it’s the
end of the week I want to go out on the broad have some peace and serenity
tonight find it a little bit difficult trying to get stuff done on the boat
when I’m on the war into this high temperatures all day the people walking
past and the minute sunny turn into hours of the next thing you know you
spent about three hours talking to people and I do a lot of in the summer
thing is I’m doing so I thought maybe if I come out here I live here to get
something down but we’re making progress we’re getting some stuff done so I’m
quite chuffed and yeah we have a nice night on the corner and shut up so happy
days I will say there’s some chap who watches these videos I think he said
he’s an appellate of Australia and I’m pretty sure he saves in the forties out
there at the moment that’s really nice to hear because before the booze in my

but seriously this is great this is wonderful it’s nobody a peaceful anybody

Norfolk Broads: The Beast From The East – Boat Vlog Ep 80

    September 11, 2019

You can feel it now in the air like that
horrible icy feeling to it I’m in two minds whether to stay here the another
night or move because I’ve got a strong feeling that tomorrow I’m gonna be
frozen in so if I’m gonna be frozen in do I be here or do I be around the
corner tricky decision to share that sunset I decided to move because there is some
freezing coming gonna freeze and I’m stuck down here
there’s no shops it’s not evenly deals at the moment so we go to the next place
we stop by the supermarket it’s definitely going to free I’m not going
to put the boat through the ice again this is coming out a couple monthly
amount of damage didn’t ask it so how’s that for a beautiful beautiful sunset
see this is what the winter is all about it is as I can show you can appreciate
bloody freezing but it’s just so worth it on a day like today credible I love it I love it probably
did this for years though I’m almost and alright just is awesome
I know it’s not for everybody but I think even tower by the tone of my voice
just how much I’ve enjoyed this this is what it’s all about it’s incredible
I love it beautiful if you’re wondering why I enjoy this so
much is because when you first come out of your comfort zone initially it’s a
shock and it could be traumatic to some people but after a while it becomes
invigorating be grating because you feel alive you know you may think old cold
hands and stuff like that isn’t very pleasant it isn’t very pleasant but
that’s the whole point you can’t have pleasure without pain so when you have
days like today where it’s freezing cold and it’s snowing you you counter-effect
you like today I’m working inside the boat and I’m keeping busy and I’m
soaring and I’m drilling and bla bla bla bla and I’m not feeling it at all but my
face is cold my hands are cold and in a funny sort of way it’s exciting it’s you
feel alive and this is what it’s all about this is why we do it
now obviously I’m on the Norfolk Broads if I was at sea now I probably freeze to
death so there are some advantages to being on inland waterways I’m moving the
boat now from one location to another would be a bit painful but there are
moments when you just feel absolutely totally at home and at harmony with what
you’re doing and it’s moments like this that you you know if you’re laying on
your deathbed it’d be times like this that you think about you’d want to go
stand in the rain one last time when it’s chucking down in a storm you know
it just reminds you of what it’s like to be alive and you know we’re not here
forever so this is why we do it you do it because we love it you do it because
we enjoy being alive if I wasn’t doing this I would probably be sat at my
computer at home with the radiators on full blast mind-numbing TV going on in
the background and I’d be slowly convincing myself right must do this
must do this must do this must do this got to pay the bills got to pay the
bills bollocks and it’s a good I Sonya
Australia well as you can see the beast from the east anyway as you can see it’s
all frozen maybe where we’re going anywhere
fact I believe it’s gonna get colder now for a few more days so it’s probably
gonna get worse I should probably get some more coal I think fortunately for
me I have a supermarket around the corner and I can get diesel just there
so well then enjoy it while it’s here I don’t really know what more to say
really rather then it’s cold in Norfolk

Norfolk Broads: Chilling & The Rigging – Boat Vlog Ep 74

    September 10, 2019

try to do some work here this birds
getting in the way doesn’t speak English as it’s so quiet at the moment and the
weather’s really quite nice well not nice but it’s not cold I thought I have
a night out on the broad because it’s just so it’s just so peaceful and quiet
it’s wonderful I mean there’s not really much to look at especially this term
here because it’s all of it barren let’s eat alcohol 4G on my phone
batteries are charged up boats washed got food got wood well winter boating at
its best bit late getting up this morning it was such a beautiful night
last night and so relaxing peaceful though I just so snug I can get up but
even though I’ve got up late look how beautiful this is around here now just
so misty beautiful in a winter way if you wonder why we’re out on a boat in
the middle of the winter it’s because of David like this this is fantastic this
is beautiful and there are high boat in sight we have a queue for the showers this
morning being on a boat in the winter people think you’re mad trust me
being mad got nothing to do with it it’s awesome what do you need is heating and
days like this beautiful beautiful you just don’t get winters now you used to
when I was a boy I remember it’s just crap look it’s you can still get cold
you can still free it’s April can be a bit cold but the point I’m trying to
make is if you’re on a boat especially if you’re in a marina and you have
heating and electric perhaps it’s just like being anywhere else it’s wonderful
it’s only what do you have to move around well it’s only a few days now
until you start doing the rigging on the boat which I’m quite excited about to be
quite honest the only thing that frustrates me is I can’t
swage the copper Ferrell’s myself I’m very hands-on I like to do everything
myself you know for a couple of reasons one it’s obviously cheaper and two you
get the satisfaction of doing it self so I got to pay somebody to
swage the ferals but apart from that most of its gonna be done by me the
whole furlings gonna be rewired new shrouds and got a rig up all the
lighting again make sure that’s checked over I’ll have to check the no I have to
change the steaming light and have lights to our lights and all that but
that can wait till 8:00 let’s just get it up and at least we’ll be able to
finish off painting the top of the boat because you can’t do jack when the mast
down but it’d give me a bit of a nuisance with the bridges obviously so
I’m not going to be putting the mouse up and down
down up and down every day it’s just crazy so I’m gonna go down towards
what’s known as part of broad area that’s where Nelson how she learnt to
sell case any of you wondering about that and I’ll kill the next ten weeks or
so down there because the boat can come out then and the mass is up so so it’s
all very exciting at the moment and things are starting to come together now
and I’m just really chapped about well good morning good afternoon or good
evening wherever you may be we’re about to go get all these replaced
there’s two shrouds and one stay in there and I have no idea how much it’s
gonna cost that’s the ferals I was talking about the swaging I’ve no no
idea how much this is gonna cost it’s probably gonna be it was surprised about
50 quid actually it’s gotta be done and I’m looking for to doing it so this I
got and go back up again and the boat can start looking like saleable really
whether it’s going to shit as usual I honestly don’t know where the English
get their reserve from because I’m days like this so it’s bollocks basically but
it won’t last and we just got to do what we can do on a day like this it’s get me
indoors today and I can’t even get in the trunk Kevin there’s so much wood in
there something like about 60 70 feet in that’d be just fine right was very
strange this week we’ve gone from floods to water is literally dropping much
though I see still water is just this is gone all that over there that was all flooded
only a few days ago the clearance under the bridge is unheard of
that’s almost like somebody’s pulled the plug out it’s a frosty January morning it’s a frosty icy January morning and it’s a toasty I see beautiful cold
January morning today we’re going to be going down that way Colter shawl which
is probably the last time I could be going down that way probably go pick the
rigging up well some of the rigging I say it’s the last time because once we
get the rigging down we’re gonna be going through that bridge there wherever
it is sorry four hours down the river your masters gonna be going yeah we’re
gonna be spending the next few weeks till the end of the season down there
and then we’re gonna be bringing the boat out and well I can’t see all the
Broads forever so this may be the last time I got do this trip and it’s
beautiful River beautiful stretch of river spey an hour and I’m going to
share some clips with you about that so I’m trying to fall over here it’s all
I see and it’s such a beautiful day so that’s gonna be really cool that’s the
plan for today so I want to go up there in a few hours time and see about
picking up his rigging well good morning folks from Coulter
shelf and the Norfolk Broads in Norfolk England I have no idea what cultural
means I will look into it I like to find out what these or these words mean this
place here isn’t really Norfolk to me it kind of reminds me a bit like
London and also Sussex and I say that because you’ve got this great big common
which anybody familiar with London will know are very very common common and
also this huge house is up here it’s absolutely prosperous it’s very affluent
normally in the summertime this place is heaving as two pubs here right next to
each other but you’ll never see on the broad side shows how busy it gets the
last year I was checking chap in there and you said you had layoffs 18 staff so
I go someone extremes the other like a seasonal face I’ve never quite
understood that because life doesn’t stop in the winter so why should all the
tourism and all that this common here unfortunately is very very mud buggy
buggy buggy buggy buggy baby buggy and it’s flooded which is a bummer apart
from that I love this place now last night it was exceptionally cold it
really was temperatures plummeted and I’m really feeling it today you looked
at the key heading here you can see the white it’s not paint that’s ice
so it is really really nippy I’m up here wait for my rigging to get delivered it
should have got delivered yesterday but at the courier delivered it to the wrong
address like you do if you’re an idiot so hopefully that’s gonna come today I
used to be in the logistics industry myself so I know when it comes to
courious you need to get good weather you get babb on there’s no ifs most
common ground it’s at all what’s it gonna do a boating you
might ask everything because I’m waiting for my boat a bit so it’s just trying to
catch a comment so still a bit early in the morning
won’t the email to come and once that comes I can take a nice little wander up
here cuz there’s nice little village up there and this is the end of the
navigation as well there’s a lock around the corner I haven’t been there but I’m
gonna have to see if I can find it later on today so it’s over now for the time
being from coal to shore and hopefully later on today I’ll have my rigging you
know I woke it up this morning what I can smell is this beautiful smell well
good morning folks it is a absolutely freezing Sunday morning on the Norfolk
Broads I am still in coal to show I’m having to wait a few more days so my
rigging which is a bit of a bomb oh but that’s just where it goes and I
absolutely freezing but loving every moment of it
so as I’m gonna have to stay here for a few more days and I’m trying to get a
video up every week I might as well put up what I’ve got now I was gonna do the
rigging and the masts going up but I can do that next week now that’s fine so I’m
gonna upload a video today but I just wanted to say a big thank you to the new
patrons on patreon we’ve got a John another journal we’ve got a tux tiger
thank you very very much and to anybody else who wants to become
a patron on patreon the link is in the description and it’s a big THANK YOU
what I’m going to do is I’m going to put your name in credits and if you don’t
want your name in credits I can I can not do that if you like you should refer
or I can just put your first name in to let me know if you would like your name
in the credits so I’m gonna leave you today now from a very coal
old but scenic Coulter shawl on the Norfolk Broads and I’ve had a really
great week really enjoyed it but it is a little bit too cold for me at the moment
but luckily I’ve got my burn and I’ve got plenty of wood so I’m just gonna do
some jobs on the boat today which involves epoxy so it’s gonna smell like
crap basically so anyway I better get cracking on that and I better upload
this video so thanks again to the new patrons and thank you very much for
watching the videos if you liked be subscribed and you’ll get notified when
there’s some more videos coming up and as I say I’m gonna try and do it every
week now because it’s all gonna stock in busy now thank you very much for all the
pleasant comments and I’ll get from people it’s makes it more worthwhile and
I must admit I really do enjoy making the videos it’s all the best and see you
    next week you

    Richardson’s Boating Holiday Guide

    August 16, 2019

Speaker 1: Richardson’s are the largest operator
on the Broads. We hold around about a 40% market share. We’ve been
established here at Stalham for 50 years, so there’s a
wealth of experience within the family business. The
exciting thing that’s prompted us to do with the upsurge
in boating bookings is that we now have our own new build
department that actually constructs the boat we’re on
now. We’re in a magical place on the north of Broads. It’s
a member of the National Parks Family. It’s 126 miles of lock
free boating and Broads to explore. Well the great thing
and the difference between other holidays is the fact
that with a boating holiday your set your own pace. You
set your own itinerary and it’s a mini-adventure. Ann: I’m Ann. Roger: And I’m Roger. And we’re having our
yearly holiday on the Broads. We usually try to come for a week
every year. We just enjoy it so much. Ann: Absolutely love it. Yes. Yes. We do. Roger: Do a little bit of fishing. Ann: We have a touring caravan but we always
look forward to this one best. What’s not to like? Wildlife, peace
and tranquility. Wouldn’t want anything else. Roger: If we go to a pub, we go to a pub but
nine times out of ten – Ann: Never do. Roger: We’re more out of the way somewhere. Ann: Yeah. We don’t really get off the boat.
We cater for the week if we can. Roger: A glass of wine and a beer. Ann: Yeah. Speaker 1: The great thing about the Broads
is it is close to the city of Norwich which has been voted one of Britain’s
best cities to shop in. It has actually got the largest
amount of coffee shops per square mile. And there’s
a number of historic sites to be seen with the shopping
and then also, at the same time, you’ve got Great Yarmouth
which is the well-known tourist attraction where there’s
all the fun of the fair experience you can have. It’s a real
difference. You can have the serenity of the cruising,
you can have the liveliness and buzz of a major city, and
at the same time you can have all the fun of the fair
in Great Yarmouth. Man 2: Good afternoon. Good afternoon. Hi.
Which boat you after? Man 3: Concerto 1. Man 2: Concerto 1. Yes. She’s all ready for
you. So your first time on the Broads? Crowd: Yes it is. Yeah. Man 2: It’s a good holiday, good adventure.
Right. Please remember when you come away from the riverbank, you
can’t just drive away like you can in a car because the
back swings. So what we need to do is travel forward far
enough for the back of the boat to clear any obstacles. So
we look behind, straighten the boat up so we don’t
hit anything. Now we haven’t got enough room to turn here
so we do a three-point turn. Remember, there’s no steering
in reverse. We turn the wheel to the right. We
leave the wheel there. Hand on this control now. Once
we run out of space, neutral, reverse, full reverse. That
acts as your brakes. As we start to move back, half throttle,
watch behind, and when you run out of space at the
back, we’ve got plenty of room at the front. Put it into
forward gear and because we’ve not turned the wheel, we
know which way the boat’s going to go. Okay. And that’s what
you do as many times as you need to completely turn
and it’s also the same maneuver that we do when we come
back. And we’ll just go on up to the left-hand here. You need
to be on the right-hand side. So how do you feel at the
moment? Ann: Yeah, I’m just fine. I think parking
it though- Man 2: We’re a little way off parking it at
the moment. We’re just going to get used to how the boat handles
for a little while so just carry on down there. Ann: It’s unusual that we drive on the inside
of the river. Man 2: Yeah. I don’t know the reason. I know
the reason why we drive on the left on the road. It’s to do with the
original London Bridge and passing cabs. Gentleman’s
Agreement. But why we drive on the right on the river I can’t
tell you. Okay. Now in general you want to stay at least
six feet away from the bank. Right. I’m going to give
you control of the boat now. Ann: Yeah. Man 2: Okay, what I would like you to do is
bring the boat to a standstill please. Do you remember how I did
that? Ann: Yeah. Man 2: Okay. It’s neutral. Pull it back into
neutral. Get a hold of the knob. Ann: So just pull- Man 2: No, no, no. Pull it back. That’s it.
That’s neutral. Full reverse. All the way back. Watch the riverbank.
When the riverbank stops moving, bring it into that
central position. About now. Next one up. Good. Okay,
and forwards. Ann: Okay. Just push it straight down. Man 2: Yeah. Remember your speed limits. Get
a-going and ease the speed back. We’re in a 4 mile an hour zone
so we want 1200 revs. That’s good. Just about there. That’s
it. Carry on up the river. So that’s how that control works. Speaker 1: So we have around about 270 boats
here at Stalham and when people arrive they get shown the boat, get
taken on a trial run. So it’s a 30-40 minute trial run
with one of our qualified instructors, just so that we’re
confident and the customer’s confident that they’re
going to be able to handle the boat correctly for the week. Ann: 3: We’ve always lived near the Broads,
but obviously never holidayed but I actually worked at a leisure
center a long while ago and there was a boat yard as well.
We had a trip on there and we were just hooked. My mum and
her partner always did it and we done it with those for
a lot of years, didn’t we? And sadly they’ve gone now.
But we just carry on because we love it so much. I can’t
think of not doing it. Speaker 1: You pilot your own boat all the
time, and what we try and do is give you the real sense of ownership of that
boat. So it’s not just like you’re hiring the boat. You’re
actually owning that boat in experience for the week.
We have young groups but our main group is 46 year olds
to 70 year olds. Well the great thing about a boating holiday
is it’s almost like your retirement. You can get up
when you want, you can go where you want, and you can just
completely set the plans on your own. Ann: No rushing about; you can just take it
at your own pace. Roger: Yeah. Ann: Wildlife. There’s something happening
all the time. Roger: Those walks as well. There’s loads
of walks. Ann: There are so many walks. Roger: And different places. Ann: If you’re a fisherman, there’s always
fishing. Well, right [inaudible 09:38] of course, from June. Roger: Scenery. Ann: Yeah, can’t beat the scenery; and whether
it’s March or October there’s always something happening. Speaker 1: Since 2008 when the recession first
hit and there was this phrase termed stay-cation, we have seen an
increase in numbers. I think it’s given people the opportunity
to sort of think about their holiday choice and realize
what fantastic opportunities there are to holiday
really close to home. Staying in the UK has the real advantage
that you don’t have to queue, don’t have to park, don’t
have to wait for your flights, no flight delays. Also,
I think what people have forgotten is how beautiful
this country is. Ann: You’ve got to remember, you can’t get
from A to B in half an hour. You have to plan where you’re going. If you
want a pub you have to plan where you’re going a day ahead. Roger: Quite confined space as well. Ann: Yes. Roger: You’ve got to remember that because
a lot of people if they’re in a confined space don’t always get on well
together. Ann: No. No. Roger: Apart from that I think- Ann: And by the rails, it’s you make it safe.
You make it safe so always obey. Roger: Yeah. Life jackets and stuff like that.
Respect the water. Respect the water because you come down here,
it’s very peaceful and quiet but if you go towards Yarmouth
that’s when things start to get a bit more tidal.
So you’ve got to respect and just watch what you’re doing
all the while. Speaker 1: The customers just don’t need a
license to operate. Obviously we have all the licensing in place but it
really is down to the trial run given by one of our experienced
operators. Once we’re happy that the customer is confident
of handling the boat and the customer’s confident then
it’s all down to you. Man 3: You’ve got to forget about driving
a car. A lot of people say, “If you can drive a car, you can drive a boat.”
But a boat is completely different to a car so you’ve
got to just put that car out of your mind and just relax and
follow what you’re told to do. That should be okay. Speaker 1: With the boating holiday, as I
said, is that you set your own itinerary. You take it at your own pace. You
can have the lively experience of the city or the tourist
attraction in Great Yarmouth. Or you can moor up in the
middle of the Broad, drop the anchor and just be in a complete
world of your own. Man 4: My own personal experience with a Broads
holiday has been when I took my children on a boat. They’ve experienced
the magical Disney Land and they’ve been to the
Caribbean and what they say to me is, “Can we please go
on another Broads boating holiday, Dad?”
